St. Albans Pubs: The Cock
The Cock pub, at the top of St. Peter’s Street (the main throughfare and home to St. Albans market) is split between a relatively cozy pub and a small restaurant.
There are sanded and polished wooden floorboards throughout, tongue and groove walls, with an exposed brick wall between the main and side bar areas. On market days it gets quite busy, even overcrowded, but during the week and outside of lunch hour, it’s a pleasant place to relax with a quiet pint of Budvar.
The food is good and The Cock offers reduced rate two and three course meals at lunch. For dinner it’s best to book ahead. The Cock also serves sandwiches, homecut chips and a soup of the day in the bar area.
The great thing about The Cock is that it’s quite adaptable – there are stools with small shelves to lean against (see photo), leather sofas, tables with chairs, a few upturned barrels to put a beer on if you prefer to stand, and the restaurant which has ample tables and chairs for a private meal.
