Pizza in St. Albans: Pizza Express
There really aren’t that many proper local restaurants with good pizza in St. Albans. In fact, the only one I can think of is La Cosa Nostra which we’ve already raved about here.
Luckily, Pizza Express fills that gap in the market through a typical offering of the nationwide chain – good pizza, interesting combinations of toppings and modern decor that makes you feel you’re dining somewhere a bit more upmarket than you are.
It gets busy in the evenings, particularly from Wednesday until Sunday, so it’s best to book in advance if you can.
You’ll find Pizza Express at 11-13 Verulam Road, St Albans, Hertfordshire AL3 4DA [map] Tel: 01727 853020. Alternatively, there is also a Pizza Express on the High Street in nearby Harpenden [map] Tel: 01582 765714

Thanks James. A bit of filthy language is always worth repeating.
we visited this pizza express this morning on a stop passing through and found it a very nice place to eat, the manager welcomed us and was very obliging as we got there befor opening time,we chose our meal and it arrived promtly, the staff were very friendly and professional in their work.the restuarant was very clean and well set up. our meal was lovely, we had no complaints about anything and if passing through again will definatly stop in their for our meal
I like the St Albans Pizza Express, but whatever you do don’t go to the Pizza Express in Berkhamsted, shabby, grubby and terrible service.
I’ve been to Pizza Express on Verulam Road many times in the last few years. It seemed the right thing to do.
I put up with that nagging feeling that the pizzas get smaller and the prices just get bigger. They do, or did, a really good pizza, in a reasonable atmosphere.
But they’ve really gone down hill. The most notable thing, as anyone who goes there will tell you, is the deterioration in the service. Often grumpy, and always very slow.
Tonight was the last straw. It took an hour from our arrival (we had booked) to getting our pizzas. A whole hour. We were informed that they were so busy that “my manager is the chef tonight”. What does THAT mean? The chef was organising the tables? The manager was having a go at cooking?
Judging from my soggy, ill-formed meal, I would guess the latter. I don’t usually have any trouble polishing off a pizza. But this one defeated me after just a couple of mouthfuls. It just had nothing going for it. I continued to about a third of the way through, just for show, then gave up.
Time’s up, PE. You’ve lost my business I’m afraid.
