St. Albans Bar and Restaurant: Barneys

Submitted by Robin Hamman on April 10, 2007 – 12:455 Comments

Barney’s, located on London Road just a minute’s walk from St. Albans main shopping area, is the perfect place to unwind with a few drinks and nibbles.

The menu, which could come straight from an American bar and grill, offers plenty of opportunities to share with mates including potato skins loaded with cheese and bacon, and nachos with a 7 or 9 layer dip.

There’s also a wide variety of sandwiches (which can be served with soup) including the Philly Cheese Steak and, one of our family favourites, The Reuben. They also do hotdogs and burgers, which includes a scrummy veggie burger as an option, better than anywhere in St. Albans.

The pints of Amstel are – we swear – the coldest and freshest in town (better than Lloyds!) which is good because service can, even when the place is empty, be rather slow although it is usually friendly. At night, particularly at the weekends, expect Barney’s to be noisy and smoky. There is sometimes free wifi but it’s often not working so don’t check that you can get online before ordering if the wifi is what you’re really there for.

Kids welcome in the restaurant during lunch and the mid-afternoon although smoke can waft in from other areas of the bar.

Barney’s is located at 28-30 London Road, St. Albans, Hertfordshire, AL1 1NG [map]

This is a complaint about Barneys in St Albans. I have just had the worst meal there ever. I was served by the supervisor Dave Merriman who was lovely, polite & apologetic. There wasn’t any coffee or neptune, the garlic mushrooms weren’t breaded-just a bowlful of mushrooms with sauce. Its the only time I have ever refused to eat most of my meal. The chicken wrap was terrible too.I would appreciate feedback from the management asap.Thank you.

I have eaten at Barneys today after being recommended by friends. I must say it was one of the best meals I have ever had,I had the Steak Frites which I would highly recommend, the salad was really good as well, Service was great. All three of our plates were empty, we will definately be going back. Thank you again

I think the food is gorgeous at Barney’s – just a little overpriced!

Barneys is more your kind of a groovy bar where you want to meet people and get served by curteous and professional bartenders who effort themselves to making your evening a joyful experience in every way. The place is predictably crowded and it’s packed full on weekends. There is an American element to the ambiance and it leans more on the bar idea than on the food fare supporting element. If you want to play unequivocally safe when it comes to food snacks go for burgers. The hamburgers served at Barney’s are among the best you can try in the Greater London and, probably, on this side of the Atlantic.
