Learn English, French, Spanish or Italian in St. Albans

St. Albans School of Languages is conveniently based right in the city centre, at 35 Market Place, St. Albans. They offer full and part-time English language courses for beginners, intermediates and advanced learners during the day and also an evening course for Advanced English Learners.

Our nephew, who has been learning English at his school in Poland for several years, first attended St. Albans School of Languages two years ago when he was 14. Most of the other students were young adults – 18 to 25 – so he was by far the youngest in his particular class. The older students, he reported, frequently organised to meet up at pubs or to go on an shopping outings or to the cinema together after class. There were also weekend picnics, organised by the school, in nearby Verulam park.

Our nephew’s ability to speak and comprehend both spoken and written English improved during his two weeks of full time study at the school. Where we saw the most dramatic improvement was in his confidence when speaking English, particularly in settings that were new to him, such as the train station or a shop. He also became increasingly willing to chit-chat in English and, as a result, we ended up learning all sorts of stuff about teenage culture that we hadn’t known before – not entirely sure that’s what we were hoping for but it was great for him.

Although our general view is that the school, which has very reasonable fees for English language tuition, is worth the money spent, the teaching did tend to vary widely from inspiring (Natalie) to mediocre. Groups of students change all the time as people tend to come for a few weeks on holiday or to visit relatives whilst studying at the school then they go. The school can also arrange accomodation for students who need it.

St. Albans School of Languages also offers regular French, Spanish and Italian courses and can also offer German, Greek and Russian on request.

I think a very good complement to this kind of sites is to practise with a real teacher like in Linkua, live language tutoring. Classes are done via videoconference
