Bank Holiday Weekend – What Are You Doing?
It’s unusual for me to have a whole day to myself, let alone a whole bank holiday weekend with absolutely no agenda. I’ll probably catch up on some blogging here but what else should I do? What are you doing?
Here’s a list of some things that might be fun to do in St. Albans over the weekend on Saturday, the only day we’re likely to have decent weather:
[UPDATE: I totally forgot that the Herts County Show is this Saturday and Sunday (24/25 May). It's £13 for adults at the gate with family tickets available for £31 - which is why I forgot.]
1. Saturday Market – stock up on fruit, veg and other stuff. You’ll probably find it’s cheaper than the supermarket although if you’re unlucky enough to have to park a car in St. Albans you need to set off early.
2. A walk from the Abbey down through the park is always popular on a nice day. The freaky Canadian Geese kinda put me off the lake though. Many people don’t realise that, at the bottom end of the lake, if you start to walk up towards the fields, there is a cafe, kids splash area (which will be PACKED) and a roman mosaic. Turn the other way and you’ve got the museum, free for local council tax payers who have proof of residence. It’s good but don’t expect to be there more than half an hour.
3. Pubs, pubs, pubs [photos / reviews]
4. If you’re after a bit of quiet nature, check out Watercress, a real hidden oasis of wildlife just minutes walk from the centre.
5. My kids are away, but if they weren’t, I’d be considering a trip to Willows farm or Big Space. I said considering. Both will be PACKED and a complete nightmare on a bank holiday weekend.
6. Visit the Roman Amphitheatre then walk up towards the Gorehambury Estate where there is a more recent folly. If you’re driving, you could try Childwickbury, on Redbourn Road. There’s a nice little village and pedestrian access to a long rambling road that passes through fields and ends in a cluster of trees.
That’s six ideas from me, how about some from you? What are you doing in or around St. Albans today? Post in the comments below, or on your own blog and post a link here.
