Lunch at The Cock – best chips in town?

Submitted by Robin Hamman on June 10, 2008 – 14:044 Comments

The Cock, which I discovered today has a nice courtyard adds garden, is a pub I’ve never loved or hated. Their restaurant serves reasonable meals, service is good but not perfect, they’ve got a decent beer selection although perhaps a bit short on real ales to choose from… All ok until you get to the hand cut chips which, in my opinion (and it’s my blog!) are likely to be the best in town.

  • The Cock is a great little St Albans ‘gastropub’. You’re guaranteed a great meal in cosy surroundings or, if you prefer, a quick pint by the bar next to a roaring fire in the winter. The Cock is a great excuse for a post-shopping-saturday-market-day drink… Being more of a Wino myself I certainly rate their excellent choice of New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs!

Having been a fan of this place for many years, I had the most disappointing visit this Sunday. Had to send food back for the first time in my life (noticed 2 other diners do the same not long afterwards) and when it reappeared it was not much better. Service indifferent, the non-returned food ok-ish, the bill was wrong and the music was so loud (happy house doesn’t seem to fit with the Sunday early evening dining clientele!) – what has happened here?

Have Been away from town for 5-6 months and just had to get back to my favourite cozy local. The chef must have changed recently as my meal had surpassed anything I have eaten there before, which was still at a very high standard and grteat value for money. The service was very welcoming and swift. Started with the seared scallops that were cooked to perfection, followed by wild venison which again was unfalltable… the absolute highlight was a world class cheesecake that I have actually been in since for a cheeky take away. My only problem with this pub is it can get very busy at lunch, mainly due to the delicious cheap lunch menu, that especially on market day has the place chocker…
