Loch Fyne Restaurant, St. Albans

Submitted by Robin Hamman on August 8, 2008 – 12:484 Comments

I had the vegetarian option (there’s just one) which was lovely.

Others in my party, however, didn’t think very highly of their seafood and fish. One had king prawn which she felt was over cooked and actually sent back. This was replaced with a white fish – I think it was grilled sole – which, again, was over cooked. Another one of our party tried both dishes and agreed that they’d been overcooked.

The restaurant itself is a beautifully converted barn and the two waitresses who served us were pleasant, efficient and child friendly. The manager too was helpful when we wanted to send the prawns back.

Maybe we just had a chef who, on the day, was under-performing. I think Anna had a different experience here last week and am waiting for a review from her before pronouncing this Loch less than Fyne.

I’ve generally enjoyed meals here. But I’ve felt that value-wise it is best to go before 7pm when there’s normally an offer on, which is about right…

This is also one of the chain restaurants identified as subsidising the minimum wage using customers tips….

That’s interesting Lee. I actually asked the waitress who served us if she would get the full tip if I put it through the chip and pin machine and she said yes. Now I wish I’d left cash instead.

I think it is actually a former tyre and exhaust shop , not a converted barn, so the trendy conversion is quite clever. When we have been to Loch Fynes here and elsewhere we have found them O.K but hit and miss–don’t have the tuna carpaccio unless you like raw fish. The soups are good, but the total bill can spiral with extras and drinks.
