information and independent reviews about living, shopping, eating and drinking in St. Albans. It's authored primarily by a man in his 30's who occasionally begs for posts from other local bloggers. No cash or other rewards have ever been received in an exchange for a review.

The Portland is my local (about 50yds away) and it's great. Agree about the yo-yo-ing but the food has been good for several years now. I think it also has wifi should you want it.

The Portland Arms has been up and down like a yo-yo in recent years--from time to time excellent in atmosphere and food, at other times disappointing, looking a bit shabby and poor food. It seemed to vary with the landlord and chef, and since visiting was a lottery we stopped going. So good news for locals if it is back on form under new managers, since it has the potential to be a great "local". The new menu looks good on the website, and it looks welcoming too. Will return to give it another try.
