Review of Thai Square St. Albans

This afternoon, we decided to stop into Thai Square for lunch with the kids. Those who have lived in St. Albans for more than a couple of years will still remember that the magnificent Tudor building at the corner of George Street and the High Street was previously the Tutor Pub.

Thai Square, a chain, restored the building to it’s former glory with tasteful Thai decor added – this so could have gone wrong but the combination of chunky old wooden beams, plaster and lathe walls, and a quirky layout that reveals room after room as you move through it works really well:

In addition to the lovingly restored Tudor building, Thai Square also serves beautifully prepared, and tasty, food. Definitely recommended for meals with out of town guests you want to impress, for a date or, in the afternoon at the weekend when it’s quiet, great for a family meal too.

4+ Inch Deep Crater in Road a Serious Danger

Yesterday I spotted a pothole several inches deep at the top of Normandy Road:

It was so shocked by it’s depth that I actually went home to get a tape measure – and found that it’s over 4 inches deep. This pothole and others like it are putting road users and pedestrians at risk. See my article on St. Albans People for more.

St. Peter’s Church Stars in EastEnders Role

Last night’s episode of EastEnders, in which Bianca and Ricky got married, was filmed at St. Peter’s Church in St. Albans.

St. Albans Bloggers Meet-Up and Tweet-Up: 11 March

It’s been a long time, probably too long, since the last St. Albans bloggers meet-up, which took place last winter (much to our surprise there was several inches of snow on the ground by the time we left!).

Alex at Shedworking made the timely suggestion that we do it again. Maz on St. Albans People, a new local site where I’ve been posting articles and photos since December, took the initiative and has booked the bar at the Hare and Hound, on Sopwell Lane, from 18.30 on 11 March.

Part blog meet, the evening will also be St. Albans’ first ever “tweet up”, and we’re looking forward to meeting local bloggers, twitter users and members of the St. Albans People community. We’ll be in the bar on the left hand side – come along if you fancy an evening of meeting new and interesting people.

Last Chance to Register for St. Albans Annual Pancake Race

Tomorrow, Shrove Tuesday (16 February 2010) is the Annual St. Albans Pancake Race, which will take part in front of Town Hall at Noon.

You don’t have to be able to create beautiful pancakes like these made by my mum – all you have to do is put together a four person team to run, whilst flipping a pancake in a pan. There is still time to register your team for the event. Details here…

The visitor figures for January 2010 are in, with numbers boosted significantly by people looking for information and photos following the heavy snowfall at the start of the month. View From the Top of St. Albans Cathedral (Residents First Weekend)

I took the opportunity, as part of St. Albans Residents First Weekend, to go on a tour to the top of the Cathedral today. I’ve posted a full review, which includes some nice pieces of local history I learned on the tour, on St. Albans People.

The tour itself was informative, interesting and fun but the real gem, and the point of our going, was the view which, given the beautiful clear day, was nothing short of breathtaking:

The Courtyard Cafe on Hatfield Road

Today I dropped in to the Courtyard Cafe, located next door to the Museum of St. Albans on Hatfield Road, for breakfast and coffee on my way to a meeting at work. Although I’d passed the building, a former Synagogue that, in addition to the Courtyard Cafe, also houses a Yoga hall, I’d never had the chance to stop in. And I’m glad I did.

EastEnders Returns and New Primary to be Built

The cast of EastEnders is back in St. Albans, filming at St. Peter’s Church, today. It’s not the first time the BBC has chosen to film EastEnders in St. Albans, a city that played an important part in the early days of cinema.

In other St. Albans news, the County Council has confirmed that it plans to build a new primary school in St. Albans. Nothing to do with EastEnders, of course.
