Choose from a selection of twelve locally sourced sausages – try three different varieties at a time. Last years winner was A&C Meats on Catherine Street. The White Hart Tap, my favourite St. Albans Pub for food and real ale, recently held a sausage festival aimed at giving diners the opportunity to sample sausages from a variety of local butchers. A&C Meats, on Catherine Street, won top honours in the awards with their Pork and Harvest Pale Ale Sausage.

Char-Grilled, Locally Sourced Steak

The Alford Arms in Frithsden has won more than it’s fair share of awards over the years, including Hertfordshire Dining Pub of the Year in the 2010 Good Pub Guide.

We decided to take a drive out in the countryside today and, after 25 minutes of winding, single track lanes bordered by hedge rows, found ourselves at the front door of this great pub. If you’re familiar with the Wicked Lady, and like the “countryside” feel of the Brocket Arms, you’re bound to like The Alford Arms which has great food, much of it sourced locally, is beautifully situated, offers friendly and efficient service, and manages to hang on to some of it’s country pub charm. I’ve written a full review over on StAlbansPeople. Recommended wholeheartedly.

The White Hart Tap has long been my favourite St. Albans pub when I’m after a pint of real ale and a bite to eat. The Sunday Roast is a firm family favourite, and the lunch menu, which includes sandwiches and paninis, as well as seasonal specialities such as pumpkin soup (see photo) is great for a quick bite. Recommended…

Kashu on Hatfield Road is launching a summer series of DJ evenings with the first taking place this Friday, the 28th of May. The restaurant, which offers an innovative modern menu, also has outdoor seating and is almost certain to be a firm favourite this summer.

Review of Thai Square St. Albans

This afternoon, we decided to stop into Thai Square for lunch with the kids. Those who have lived in St. Albans for more than a couple of years will still remember that the magnificent Tudor building at the corner of George Street and the High Street was previously the Tutor Pub.

Thai Square, a chain, restored the building to it’s former glory with tasteful Thai decor added – this so could have gone wrong but the combination of chunky old wooden beams, plaster and lathe walls, and a quirky layout that reveals room after room as you move through it works really well:

In addition to the lovingly restored Tudor building, Thai Square also serves beautifully prepared, and tasty, food. Definitely recommended for meals with out of town guests you want to impress, for a date or, in the afternoon at the weekend when it’s quiet, great for a family meal too.

The Courtyard Cafe on Hatfield Road

Today I dropped in to the Courtyard Cafe, located next door to the Museum of St. Albans on Hatfield Road, for breakfast and coffee on my way to a meeting at work. Although I’d passed the building, a former Synagogue that, in addition to the Courtyard Cafe, also houses a Yoga hall, I’d never had the chance to stop in. And I’m glad I did.

St. Albans Residents First Weekend 2010 – 30/31 January

Residents’ First Weekend gives people the opportunity to try out many of their local attractions free of the usual entry charge, or with a special offer, or to gain entry to places which are not normally open to the public. According to figures released by the Council, on average five / six thousand people participate in this two-day event, with leisure centres, the cathedral and the museums amongst the favourite venues.

To take advantage of some of the more popular special offers available you’ll need to obtain a voucher, available at the Tourist Information Centre, located at the back of the old Town Hall.
